Multi-Gas Live Monitoring

Use NLIR’s ultra-fast MIR spectrometers to monitor multiple gases simultaneously

Real-time insight. Multi-gas clarity

Industrial processes, environmental monitoring, and emissions control increasingly demand real-time monitoring of multiple gases simultaneously. Traditional solutions like NDIR or electrochemical sensors often target one or two gases – requiring parallel systems, complex calibrations, or compromises in speed.

NLIR’s mid-infrared spectrometers can change that.

NLIR’s fast MID-IR spectrometers deliver millisecond-scale updates across a wide spectral range, enabling accurate, simultaneous detection of key gases such as CO₂, CH₄, NOₓ, H₂O, and more – even in dynamically changing or harsh environments.

How does it work?

Gases can be detected using infrared (IR) spectroscopy by measuring light in transmission. A light source sends light through a gas-filled chamber or pipe, and a spectrometer captures how the light is absorbed by the gas.

The video demonstrates this setup in action. NLIR’s FIBER Light Source delivers light through a fiber to a simple gas cell, while another fiber guides the transmitted light to NLIR’s MIDWAVE Spectrometer. The spectrometer captures spectra every 20 milliseconds, clearly showing the transmission features on screen.

This setup can be installed in industrial environments to provide real-time data on the composition of gases inside pipes or chambers.

Multi-Component Gas Spectra Analysis - A Measurement Case

The figure shows the transmission spectrum of a gas cell with a mix of 6 different gases (CO2, N2O, CO, CH4, C2H2, and N2) measured using the NLIR’s FIBER Light Source, two COLLIMATORS, two MIRFIBERs, and the MIDWAVE Spectrometer.

A single shot of 20 ms exposure time capture the data shown, and no further data processing was applied. This measurement shows that it’s possible to monitor many different gases at the same time with NLIR’s equipment and obtain live information about the gas composition. From data like this, concentration values can be derived using chemometric of machine learning techniques.
