Real-Time Mid-Infrared Analysis for Historic Paintings
Material analysis of historic paintings is often limited by restricted access, and measurement time constraints. Therefore, the speed and portability of conventional equipment are usually insufficient to perform in-depth material analysis. NLIR’s compact spectrometers offer real-time, non-invasive measurements in the 2.0 – 5.0 µm range, designed specifically to overcome these constraints.
With NLIR’s MIR spectroscopy instruments, you can perform measurements at museums, galleries, churches, and other archaeological sites in real time, gaining deeper insights into an artist’s technique, materials used, and the long-term stability of a painting without posing risk of damage to the artwork.
How does it work?
Setting up NLIR’s solution for non-destructive historic paintings’ investigation is easy. Just set-up NLIR’s REFLECTION Measurement System and get mid-infrared insights while preserving the integrity of the artwork.

Investigating Materials of A PaintinG - A Measurement Case
We have performed a mid-infrared reflection spectroscopy on an early-mid 20th century painting by Danish artist Poul Kastrup. Five different points were measured covering wavelengths from 2.0 – 5.0 μm.
The results show 5 distinct sampling points, with variations in absorption intensities and peak features indicating differences in material composition across the surface.
By leveraging mid-infrared spectroscopy, we were able to gain insights into the painting’s chemical composition of aged pigments, binders, and varnishes.
