Optical Coating Characterization

Capture transmission or reflection spectra of optical coatings in just milliseconds

Can production of optical coatings be monitored live?

NLIR’s high-speed MIDWAVE Spectrometer enables real-time transmission measurements of optical coatings in the 2.0 – 5.0 µm range, with acquisition times as short as a few milliseconds.

In coating systems using rotating substrate holders, NLIR’s rapid acquisition allows a complete transmission spectrum to be captured for every substrate on every rotation. This provides continuous, detailed insight into coating development throughout the deposition process.

Much like visible-light spectrometers used in inline monitoring across various industries, NLIR’s technology brings the same capabilities to the mid-infrared range – with new advantages:

  • High Speed: Full-spectrum measurements in just milliseconds
  • Robust Design: No moving parts ensures high reliability in demanding environments
  • High Resolution: 2000 pixels across the 2.0 – 5.0 µm spectral range

How does it work?

In this video, we demonstrate how NLIR’s MIDWAVE Spectrometer, combined with FIBER Light Source, can measure transmission spectra of optical filters in real time. With an exposure time of just 2 ms, the spectrometer captures data from every filter on the rotating wheel during each full rotation.

The video first shows the distinct transmission spectra of each filter, then illustrates how the spectrometer continues to capture spectra accurately even as the wheel spins at 300 RPM providing less than 30 ms per filter.

OPTICAL COATING CHARACTERIZATION WITH NLIR’S MIDWAVE SPECTROMETER

NLIR’s TRANSMISSION Interface with a 5 mW FIBER Light Source were used to carry out these transmission measurements of optical coatings: a Thorlabs FB3330-150 IR Bandpass filter with center wavelength at 3.33 μm and a Thorlabs FB4260-105 IR Bandpass filter with center wavelength at 4.25 μm resulting in the spectra depicted in the graph to the right. NLIR’s MIDWAVE Spectrometer was set to 20 ms exposure time and 10 spectra were averaged for each sample.
